This month was heavy on the re-reads, so I haven’t managed to read too many new books, but the ones I did pick were mostly great.

Graveyard Shift, M. L. Rio

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A novella about a group of unlikely acquaintances who gather at the cemetery each night for a smoke and a mysterious science experiment that got out of hand.

It was an absolutely perfect read for the season: dark, creepy, and fun in a scary way. My only complaint is that it was not a novel because I need more of this author’s writing.

The Bad Seeds, C. J. Skuse

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The fifth and final book in the Sweetpea series, which did not disappoint. Rhiannon’s story was wrapped up about as well as it could’ve been, which made me infinitely happy since series that are good from start to finish are so rare.

I’d recommend it to anyone who loves dark humor, strong and unhinged MCs, and a fast-paced plot. It’s an awesome series to binge.

Cackle, Rachel Harrison

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A balanced mixture of horror and girl power. Our MC moves to a picturesque little town while she’s going through a terrible period in life. She’s adrift, lost, and depressed. That’s when she meets Sophie – a glamorous and exciting woman who lives in the woods and seems to evoke reverence from every single resident in the area. The MCs future is shrouded in darkness, and it’s up to her to take an unexpected opportunity or to fade back into her unremarkable life.

If I had to sum up this book in one sentence, I’d go for: ‘We should let go of extraneous pressures and become wicked witches of the forest.’

An Academy for Liars, Alexis Henderson

⭐️⭐️⭐️

A novel I’ve been excited about for a long time. It delivered the vibes, but I found the plot lacking. I was very invested in the first half of the book and, sadly, the farther in, the faster the fucks I had to give dissipated. I found the magic system amazing as a concept, yet its execution wasn’t that much fun for me.

It’s still a good book to check out if you crave some dark academia, though.
