It was a productive reading month, especially since I’ve enjoyed a lot of the books more than usual.

The Women of Wild Hill, Kirsten Miller

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

‘I’m not a whore, sweetheart. I’m a witch.’

Three witches from one family are called back to their ancestral home to change the world. There’s nothing better than men getting what they deserve, and, ultimately, this book covers that deliciously.

Nine Goblins, T. Kingfisher

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

‘Well, yeah. Lotta people die of politics.’

A novella about nine goblins having an accidental adventure away from the front lines of a senseless war. It was incredibly fun, quirky, and heartwarming. The best thing I’ve read in a while. I seriously need like a 20-book-long series about these characters.

Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

‘…so he shall never know how I love him: and that, not because he’s handsome, Nelly, but because he’s more myself than I am.’

This was a re-read for me to refresh my memory before watching Emerald Fennell’s adaptation. It is a devastating and harrowing tale of horrid human beings hurting each other and everyone they can get to. I’m not a fan of it being told from the perspective of an entirely irrelevant person, but other than that, I love how dark it gets.

The Housemaid’s Secret, Freida McFadden

(The Housemaid #2)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Decided to continue the series after watching the new adaptation of part one. Millie’s adventures with strange employers continue, although everything is, as always, not what it seems.

The Housemaid’s Wedding, Freida McFadden

(The Housemaid #2.5)

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Literally what it’s called – a short story about Millie’s wedding, which doesn’t pass without a certain degree of danger.

The Housemaid Is Watching, Freida McFadden

(The Housemaid #3)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Aaaand the last (to date) book about our heroine. Still fun, although this time the danger is even closer than before.

Gossip Girl, Cecily von Ziegsar

(GG #1)

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Everyone in this book is either garbage, way too dramatic, or both, and I love it.

You Know You Love Me, Cecily von Ziegsar

(GG #2)

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I mean… it’s still a mess, but a fun one.

The IT Girl, Ruth Ware

⭐️⭐️⭐️

A thriller about the murder of an exuberant heiress at Oxford, and the way the case comes back to haunt her closest friend ten years down the road. Maybe the police got the wrong person, after all.

The Killer Inside Me, Jim Thompson

⭐️⭐️⭐️

‘If the good Lord made a mistake in us people it was in making us want to live when we’ve got the least excuse for it.’

Lou Ford is your local, friendly cop who talks in cheesy sayings and is such a nice guy. Only all that is a front, and there’s a vile monster lurking beneath.

I liked the book, though not as much as I’d expected. The beginning is very strong, but it loses steam by the middle.

Honey Bee, Dawn O’Porter

⭐️⭐️⭐️

‘My “purpose” is like a mythological goblet that’s totally out of reach.’

A novel of two young women searching for their place in the world. Both are a mess in their own way.
